Board Certification (U.S.)/Primary Specialist Training (Non-U.S.)

To become certified in nuclear cardiology, U.S. Applicants must be physicians who hold current certification in one of the following: Cardiology, any of the ABIM Cardiology subspecialties, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology by a board which holds membership in either the American Board of Medical Specialties or the Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists of the American Osteopathic Association.

All applicants must document current board certification.

Testamur: Individuals enrolled in an ACGME or AOA fellowship or residency program in Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine, or Radiology and who are not yet board certified may apply to sit for the examination as Testamurs. Non-U.S. applicants enrolled in a Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology program may also apply.  Certification and issuance of CBNC certificates will only be granted, however, when all requirements are met within 6 years of the examination.  Such candidates who pass the examination will be listed as “Testamur” until all requirements for

  • U.S. APPLICANTS: Board Certification in Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology and a copy of a current and unconditional license is received by the CBNC office.
  • NON-U.S. APPLICANTS: Documentation for completion of primary specialist training in Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology and a copy of a current and unconditional license is received by the CBNC office (with English translation.)  See below for acceptable documentation to establish primary specialist training.

Regardless of when a Testamur becomes a Diplomate, CBNC certification will expire 10 years from the date of passing the examination.

To become certified, NON-U.S. Applicants must be physicians who document completion of primary specialist training in Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology. A diploma or national registration as a specialist in Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology must be provided.  A letter of completion from the Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology Program where the applicant trained will be accepted.

Document Content and Format

U.S. APPLICANTS must provide one of the following:

  • A copy of current Cardiology, any ABIM Cardiology subspecialties, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology certificate.
  • A letter from the certifying board.
  • A printout from the certifying board’s website displaying your board certification status.

At a minimum, the document must show your name, issuing board and expiration date.

NON- U.S.APPLICANTS must provide one of the following:

  •  A copy of your Diploma in Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology.
  •  A copy of your national registration as a specialist in Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology
  •  A letter of completion from your Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine or Radiology Program.

Documentation must include English translation.
